11,000 Holy Virgins Relic Oil

Saint Ursula lived in the early centuries after Christ. She was of Romano-British descent and was martyred as she travelled on a three year pilgrimage with 11,000 companions.

Ursula and her travel companions reputed to be 11,000 virgin maidens were in the city of Cologne in Germany where they were massacred for refusing the sexual advances of a group of invading Huns. The young virgin maidens were beheaded and Ursula was shot in the head by an arrow.

Within the Cologne Cathedral there is a side chapel with its base containing identical reliquaries containing the relics of the virgins.

The oil is burned for 18 days in Germany before the relics of the martyred virgins and then for 9 days in Ireland.
