St. James the Greater
St. James with his brother St. John were the sons of Zebedee and Salome and known as the "Sons of Thunder". As one of the twelve apostles, he traveled and evangelized present day Spain. The "Way of St. James", commonly called the "Camino de Santiago", is one of the most popular pilgrimages in Europe where people walk varying distances to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia where St. James' tomb is found within the Cathedral. St. James' emblem is the scallop shell (or "cockle shell"), and pilgrims to his shrine often wear that symbol on their hats or clothes.
