St. Sebastian was a soldier in the Roman army about year 283 under the Roman emperor Diocletian.  When it was discovered that he was a Christian who had converted many other soldiers, he was condemned to death.  He was shot with arrows and left for dead, but when the widow of St. Castulus went to recover his body, she found he was still alive and nursed him back to health. When it became known he was still alive, he was beaten to death

St. Sebastian is the patron saint of athletes because of his physical endurance and his energetic way of spreading and defending the Faith.
